The story of Slimtree Farm
Our goal is simple: to farm in cooperation with the soil, honoring both science and stewardship in the northern landscape.
Digging into soil science with Permafrost Grown has helped us understand how plants interact with the land. On parts of the farm where the seasonal water table rises, peony roots encounter saturated zones, which slow growth. By shaping raised beds and improving surface drainage, we work with the soil’s natural structure rather than against it.
Our farm lies on the ancestral lands of the Lower Tanana people, near the Noochoonee No — the Bull Moose River. We acknowledge these lands of the Chena People of the Tanana Athabascan, who cared for this
landscape long before us and continue to do so.
This piece reflects a hidden world beneath the surface, where climate, water, ancient permafrost and life meet.
Flowing bands symbolize water moving through soil layers, while roots link plants above ground with the minerals and microorganisms below.
